    I'm over it

    hi all
here's the story. had a problem with the transfer case and got that fixed. it was 3 geers missing sets of half teeth. got that fixed with a recon 2nd hand transfercase.
all was good. was comming home from newcastle got all the way to my street turned the corner and then BANG CLUNK CLUNKCLUNK CLUNK. I limped it home 400m really slowly. it happens with clutch in and in netural and both high and low range going foward. but it doesnt happen in reverse. it has a very low frequency about one clunk every 4/5 meters and with speed it speeds up naturally.

first thing i checked was the transfer case thinking i hadn't put it back properly all was good so now i am at a loss! i jacked up the wheels trying to narrow down the problem in the rear driver side there is a noticable amount of friction relative to the other wheels and there is the sound of something rubbing everyturn of the wheel (i think break disk rubbing on pads which would suggest wheel bearing i think) apart from that there's not much else i can say about current symptoms.
On the trip back there was a wobble around 105-110km/hr. also occasionaly in about the last 2 weeks i've noticed a squeek that happened occasionally around 40-60km/h when going fwd except for when turning each way at close to full lock.

    details disco '94 tdi 238000km

    any suggestions greatfully welcomed
    thanks in advance

I'd say bearing or cv initially.

Jack up each wheel, one at a time, and see if there is any play left/right or up/down. if there is, bearings.

It could be a CV. Is the noise a clunk or a click?

If one wheel has more friction than the others when you jack it up and turn it, i would say bearing or CV, there isnt much else that i can think of that would only affect the one wheel. Matt

so i just went out and did a check for the bearings and the front passanger wheel has play in it and alos a sound of metal on metal when shaking the wheel.
the back driver side wheel had no movement.
What is involved in checking the cv?
and would i be right in assuming that the wheel bearing is a fairly easy change
    thanks

You just need to remove the :-

    dust cap
    stub axle circlip
    drive flange ( 5 bolts )
disk brake caliper ( two bolts ) - move it aside and support.
    2 by hub nuts
    hub ( check bearings )
    spindle ( 6 bolts )
    extract cv/half shaft.

    EASY!

When assembling, ensure the cv isn't binding in the swivel housing, and the stub axle spline comes out clear of the spindle and spins freely.

Also you are supposed to use locktite on all bolts on assembly

You say the noise is from the right rear.

The rear driveshaft is near the right rear.
If you have a big rubber donut on the back of the driveshaft have a look at it.
You will probably find it has self destructed and is in a number of pieces.
This could easily cause many clunks.
Good news it is relatively cheap, well compared to usual Rover bits.
