Hi TheEntertainer, it’s just not worth the risk, as I posted, you only have to touch the wrong thing and you could have serious problems.
I think, in your 4x4, you can have the headlights on while the ignition is turned off. This USUALLY means that the air bag system is also off so there is little chance of setting the air bags off but you only have to forget once and go looking for a wire while the ignition is on and it could be your life.
As Andrewpv01 put it, get into the habit of using a multi meter. You can get one now days for as little as $14-00, and they have some many other uses around a 4x4, so at that price it’s just not worth the risk.
Looking for headlight wiring on many new vehicles now means that the ignition has to be turn on and this dramatically raises the chances of accidental air bag triggering.
The laws here and over seas now have the wiring for the air bag system in the own separate looms, and usually clearly coloured yellow but as I have continually posted, it only takes one accidental touch and you could be killed.
One of the problems I have come across is that many people are not sure how to use a digital multi meter and as such don’t buy one. If this is the case for anyone on the site, please let me know and I’ll try and post a tutorial in the Projects and Tuition Section explaining the basics on how to use a multi meter.
