BTW: Repco winches are excellent and work fine! 9500lb is more than enough. Dont keep adding weight to the front when it wont be required.

So what brand of synth rope is best, I know that Bill Burke in the US raves about Amsteel Blue but there must be others that are as good and available locally.

Apart from the fact that I am s#*t scared of being anywhere near a steel cable if it breaks (seen that once and was more than enough) the weight savings are great too as well as being much easier to handle.

As I understand it (feel free to correct me) synthetic cable is more expensive as are the winches that are designed for use with synthetics (allowing 'constant' running on a descent, for example).

Yeah had to rush down to Sydney last week as my Mum ended up in hospital with a whole heap of drama's while they were on there way back from the NSW south coast. But she is much better now and is expected to get out of hospital later this week and able to come home about the middle of the month.

Yes, synthetic is more expensive.
Yes, dedicated winches to run it are more expensive.

But....

A standard winch can safely run synthetic if you obey the 'rules'
A standard winch can winch in all day on synthetic, only winch out gets warm enough to do harm.

And the safety afforded in my eyes exceeds the cost of the rope 100 fold
Ever seen steel cable break? Ever seen synthetic break?

$400.00 now is nothing compared to the damage flailing steel rope does. To vehicles and people.

Not to mention convenience, lighter to lug up a hill, easier to operate and rig up...

Everyones choice of course, but I wont use or recommend steel wire rope.

Good to hear! Sick family is never a good thing.

We're going through it with both grandparents atm, something 'not good' yet inevitable is on the horizon soon.

On another note for winches, i've been told by a reputable source that a good cheap option is to pick up a cheap Warn with a stuffed motor, than replace the motor with a T-Max motor which is more powerful and a quarter of the price or a Warn engine.
