Block was ultimately stripped, at that time it was found that the cam bearings were installed previously backwards. Combined with a narrower than normal hole on the head gasket, there was not enough oil pressure to get to the head.
So issue is/was oil pressure, either from pump or from internal leaks from bearings - mains, bigs or cam.
Motors back in a vehicle now after full rebuild and purrs along fine.
