I assume there's very difference with the 2 in engine performance; reliability/durability & economy, etc etc ??

Firing order springs to mind as one of the changes.

You can hear the difference between them when idling side by side

I think the change was because of tighter emissions standards. Using both EGR and DPF in Europe.
