Vicroads appears to be broken😊
I'm not intending to criticise or start a tyre size debate
I have 16 x 8.5 compomotives with -5 offset. They came to me with 305/70/16 tyres fitted. 33"
The tyres protrude past the standard flares by around 10mm but not easy to notice unless you run a straight edge down the side.
IMO for me and my on/off road purposes and experience, I find these a visual poser fitment rather than serving any practical purpose or advantage and they are a certainly a disadvantage in turning circle.
I will be keeping the rims and swapping with 285/75 (33") which fit neatly inside the factory flares, return something of a turning circle and are unlikely to gain attention.
Arguably some Defenders came with 265s on 7 inch rims.
If you are going for the big tyres for comp work, the legalities would likely take a back seat, but despite any legal technicalities, you may not be that happy other than aesthetically with rubber that big on a registered Defender.
That may or may not help.
I've been running the BFG 285/75 for nearly 5 years now and they are great but it's just that I need to know for myself what 35"s feel like. It's burning in side of me and I just need to put this to bed 😀
