1000 wet and dry with Kero, oil, trsnsfluid, wd40 etc wont hurt it at all.
You're only doing by hand very lightly what a linnisher does.
But if it doesn't come up spotless you will need to take it to someone for a proper job or get another cam.

My 2c... Dump it in a 10% molasses / water mix and leave for a couple of weeks or as required. Remove and rinse in water. Lightly oil. Inspect. Assess. Decide. (Post pics here and get a vote of you're not sure). Very light pitting won't hurt it as it'll just hold some more oil on the lobes, heavy putting and its a regrind or junk...
The molasses will remove any rust without removing any base metal or doing any damage at all in any way. Note that anything abrasive will remove part of the surface, irrespective of method. Also it's basically free 😁 Just takes time.
Maybe a bit of a wipe with that CLR stuff could remove the rust.
Coke has phosphoric acid in its recipe. This acid is used in rust converter. Until the late 1960s/ early 1970s it had copper (Cu) in its recipe. At the time it was the second largest user of copper in the world. I believe phosphoric acid replaced the copper to keep giving Coke its "bite".
It's really good for cleaning toilets too!
