    Rusty camshaft.

Never had to worry about this before. I'm going to resurrect an old Ford in an effort to get some money for it. It has some "nice" stuff. One bit of stuff is an XR6 camshaft. This has somehow separated itself from the oil it was soaking in, and it is now quite rusty on the journals and lobes. Not pitted, but fairly strong surface rust. Can I just clean it up with a bit of wet and dry, or do I need to take it to the grinders?

dont touch it with any abrasives... It is hard faced and you can damage the surface...

Take it to someone who can Linnish it for you...

Maybe use some cotton cloth soaked with trans fluid,Diesel or Kero to clean most of the rust off, you could make a strip of cotton and polish it some by holding both ends and pull back and forwards over the lobes....

Diesel or kero is good for working the surface, they are abrasive but mild thus wont hurt the surface when working by hand...Trans fluid is milder but good for finishing... then off to get it linnished...

Just get some soapy steel wool and water and clean the surface rust off and spray some crc wd40 lanox inox or whatever on it. Steel wool wont hurt the hard surfaces.

That's sort of where I'm at. I have some very fine steel wool used for restoring antique furniture. Love Lanox.

    I'm sorry but its late,,
and I cant see how the cam surface can survive any sort of rust, surface serious or sensitive,
unless rust runs off the oil that covered the cam,, it has to run off the cam surface,, so where does all that orange colour come from? well at least some of it come s from the air,, but the rest MUST come from-----
its probably not a big deal on your front discs,,, but---

    will it run?
    sure,,
    long enough to sell?
    sure,,

That's my issue, Pedro. I won't knowingly cheat someone. I think I'll take it to the pros.

Thing is, I have a heap of new or reco bits for this car. It was SWMBO's, and I planned to give it a birthday, as the timing seal was leaking and the auto very tired, so there is a low KM auto, a new rad, timing chain and gears, a reco Tickford head, new headlights and a few things more. It was sitting, waiting for me to start, when the old RRC decided to go out on it's own. It rolled down the drive, and clobbered the Ford. Those ARB rear bars are strong, aren't they? So, I went out and bought her a newer one, and was keeping the EF to be a work car. It's only really a bootlid ( both of which I have), a tail light and a bit of a push on the rear panel. But now I want it gone. It would make a good project for some interested youngster, if such a thing still exists.

What about a light bead blast ?, should get the rust off without degrading the casting or hardening.
