    Dual Start Batteries

    Gday All,

This is not relevant to any single type of vehicle , but if connecting 2 x 12 volt batteries to start a 12 volt system , Can the 2 negative leads be earth to separate spots and not connected to each other ??

I know the Positive side needs to be connected between both batteries , but does the negative side.

I have only ever seen systems in both 12 & 24 volt where the batteries were connected both positive & negative as they were close together , but lets say you have a battery on each side of an engine bay and you want to connect them both as constant start batteries.

    Thanks and Cheers Ean

Yes, no problem providing both earth points are connected to a common part such as the block of the engine.

As mentioned, no dramas - connecting both to the engine is a good idea as the metal between the connections need to carry some decent current. Just bolting each earth to a panel for example would be a bad idea. Both to the chassis would work ok too, but just make sure that anywhere you choose is a solid connection to the other electrically than can conduct a decent whack of current like when the starter or winch is running.

As said, no problems. My 2 start batteries have earths in different places with no issues.
