    Noisy Tappets in 3.5 V8

Seeking advice from those in Rover Land that have more knowledge than I.
I have a 3.5 Litre Series 3 Land Rover that has done a genuine 84000 km, Due to the tappets being noisy I replaced the cam and lifters to discover that after a short time I still have a noisy tappet. I have done the following
    1) Run the Cam in for 15-20 Mins at 1500 rpm immediately on starting
    2) Replaced the Rockers with an old set to see if it made and difference and it made none
    3) Isolated the noise to the rear most tappet on the right hand bank. I can make the noise go away by backing off the bolt on the rocker pedestall and tightening it up again but after a few seconds the noise returns.
    4) Suspected a slipped liner but the test in 3 should disprove this.
    5) On the advice of TRS in Adelaide I didnt check the lifter preload on reassembly as all the parts were standard.

The engine performs really well with out any issues apart from that %&$3 tapping (does it hot and cold)

I suspect either a crook lifter or wrong preload.
    Does anyone have any views

the rocker posts at opposite ends have the oil feed holes in them.
they are very easily blocked and stoip oil flow asap!
also the 2nd hand set might look better but may well be
rooted also. all the rockers should be removed from the shaft
and inspected. the pushrod cups on the rocker end do move, some sit
    in, some sit out.
the ticking could also be excessive clearance between the shaft and the
    rocker, allowing oil loss.
maybe a bent push rod and excessive preload??

locate the rocker and swap it with a new one. check straightness
of the push rods. and then set the pre load.

lots of things could make this ticking noise. my 92 still ticks
like yours. i looked for mine 45 000 k's ago, still fixed
to this day with the volume controll

    cheers phil

djam, this often comes up in this conversation, look thru the old stuff posted on this site

Simply tho' i think they all do it at some time or another. I use this sound as an indication of oil level. ie at about 5000 ks after my oil change my donk gets the rattles, so I check the dipstick, and i need about a half a litre. (i change the lot a about 8000ks, including the filter)

of course there are many other issues as mentioned, but it's not unusual and not just in rover v8s either. my dear old 351ci in the fairlane used to demonstrate the same, "need more oil"!!! and i had a 308 in a Holden which also rattled, but as soon as oil was added, no rattle.

or give the oil channels a good flush, it's not hard to do

    cheers, GQ

2nd hand parts noooo. You dont know what stress they have been under and unless they are free. I was burnt by Mitsubishi with a head. My friend had a diesel Pajero that I replaced the rockers and assembly in his turbo diesel. Told me they were new to start with (got them through his brother), then when he fired it up the rocker assembly broke. I then found out that they were second hand. A shame as I could have got him new parts for the same price.

As I said on the outer limits. Exhaust manifold shot on one cylinder.

    Thanks for your replies fellas
The engine was pulled down today and the preload is all up the creek.
It would appear as though the heads have been machined and non composite gaskets have been used causing the issue.
The shop have ordered some Shims for the posts hopefully this will fix the problem.
    Once again thanks
