    Strains of oil rear wheel

    Hi all,
    Was just wondering what the likely cause is as per the picture below? The defender is booked in for a service Monday week, can the fix wait until then? Thanks

    It will be the hub seal, easy enough to replace at home and can wait til Monday.
    For peace of mind remove the wheel and check its not brake fluid.

    No need to remove the wheel. If it's regular (not silicone) brake fluid it will wash off with water. Alternatively, taste it - brake fluid has a taste once tried is never forgotten. Also, diff oil has a sulphur smell - again, not forgotten and impossible to get out your clothes!

    Cool thanks guys, i'll get one of the kids to volunteer for the taste test.... as well as removing the wheel to cross check.
