maybe just burning off the spilt oil?
LRH
Did the 5000km oil change today and all went well as usual.
But a bit later as I was hooking up the trailer to go to the tip I noticed that the exhast fumes smelt a bit oily, like fresh oil.
Checked for leaks and the fill level and all are ok, not colour to the exhaust when idling and only the normal black puff when started, not sure if it is blowing any white/blue smoke while under way and couldn't see any under hard full throttle acceleration, well not from the drivers seat anyway.
This is the first time Ive ever noticed an oily smell in the exhast fumes, its usually just the normal diesel smell.
Any ideas, as everything I can see under the bonnet looks fine. :?

Hi LRH,
No spilt oil as I'm a bit anal about that sort of thing, dont need any uneccessary oil leaks![]()

It's actually the exhaust fumes out the back of the car if you have your head down there
Maybe it's always like that with new oil change as I've never gone sniffing the exhaust after a oil change before 8O
Just wondering if it is an indicator of another problem :?:
if there is a problem it was there before you changed your oil.....
unless the sump plug or filter is leaking.....there is nothing you have done to cause it.....
the fresh oil you have put in smells worse than the oil that was already in the engine.....
do however keep an eye on your oil level for the next few days just to put your mind at ease....
if there is a problem.....it will show itself on its own.....
there is no need for stress.....
and not enough time time in our lives for stress.....

Stop sniffing exhaust fumes......it is dangerous for your health. It is not a subsitute for smoking either![]()

I have no idea. See if it settles down after a while
Is it possible that the filling process put oil in places it wouldn't normally go, and it leaked into the combustion process??
