    Disco I Tyre Options

    1998 Discovery Tdi - with stock 235/70/16s - 2 inch OME lift.

I have searched the archives and done plenty of research and I still have a couple of questions.

My plan is to fit 245/70/16 BFG A/T KOs as common opinion is this size fits without any rubbing. Not many make this size (in LT construction) - but I notice Bridgestone D693 come in this size too.

Why have some people fitted 225/75 or 245/70 instead of either the stock 235/70? All BFG A/Ts are LT construction, but why does the 235/70 have a much lower load rating than the 225/75 and the 245/70? Would the 225 and 245 tyres be 'stronger' - especially when loaded up for a camping trip?

I know one reason for the 225/75 was extra height, but in BFG's case, the 235/70 stock tyre is larger in diameter.

As for the spare on the rear door, what is required to make the 245/70 fit? I have heard 245s fit easily on a DII, and if these have the same rear door, will a spare wheel bracket from a DII directly replace the one on a DI?

If anyone has any help, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

I'll tackle the last couple of questions:

Wiil the tyre fit on the rear? It should as the overall diameter of the 245 is 14mm greater than the 235. check the current gap between the bottom of your current wheel and the bumper and I'm sure you'll find that there is more than 7mm clearance

D2 tyre carrier wont work as the wheel stud centres on the D2 are different to the D1.

Nothing is required. My 245/70 16s (Goodyear AT/R) fit no worries (1994 V8i Disco). But getting tyre cover on at the bottom is a very tight squeeze. why 225/75 or 245/70? Biggest tyre diameter could legally fit without engineering.

    I run 245/75 R16s

2" Lift roughly prob less now settled

spare fits without probs, does not touch door or bumper

tyre's do not foul guards, but to be sure I cut the bottom lip under the rear at 45deg, plenty of clearance

no need for Camel Cut

and yes there probably illegal, but with the same running gear as a Defender 90 (diffs, brakes etc) which run 235/85 R16's or 7.50 R16's there certainly far from unsafe.
