If your budget isn't quite that generous as the D2 update price tag is at this stage, the 99-00 is the safest bet becasue you'll want to put the CDL in. If you look at an 01 model, I suppose you could get underneath and see if the nut for the CDL mechanism is there https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I wouldn't call them useless at all either. Where they are dangerous is when they have a failed ascent and you go to stall start them. The problem here is without the CDL locked when you do the stall start the front doesn't have enough traction , and with an unlocked CDL the rears rotate coming down the hill but the fronts remain locked, which causes a gross loss of control in the decent. Of course it can happen when things are really steep, but its the greasy type clay where it seems to happen most. There has been a few people come unstuck like this, and is ultimately why LR reintroduced the CDL - the ETC couldn't overcome the problem.
Interestingly a similar thing happens on decents, where if you lift a single wheel, or a single wheel loses traction, then all of the tractive force that is producing the braking from the engine is lost through that wheel - so you take off until the wheel grabs traction again.

As the others have mentioned,yours is very capable in most offroad conditions.I had an experience with mine just after I bought it,much like was mentioned,it was quite un-nerving at the time as it wasnt expected luckily I had plenty of space with no obstacles to "gather it up".I have since made my own CDL acuator and the difference off road is HUGE.And you also can disable the TC/ABS which can be painful in soft sand.
All depends on how far you push it off road,my main problem is Ive had plenty of experience in Series Landies,the Disco doesnt match in approach/departure and ground clearance.BUT ITS A HELL OF A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE TRAVELLING THERE AND HOME AGAIN 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

How do you make this? Do you use parts from a series one t/case?
Also is TC/ABS now on a switch? If not how do you disable it?

Yep, my first series 2a 4-cyl petrol (10 gallon tank) was a real beast and a pig to drive back home from Fraser Island. I really needed fuel stops to recover a bit before going on. 20 mpg on the highway and 10 mpg on the beach was just WRONG compared to our Td5 :roll: https://www.aulro.com/afvb/Quote:

I just "bumped" the post for another member the other day,it should be there in the last few days postings,"My DIY CDL BROKE ITSELF" is the post to look at.There are pics of mine there and links to where I got the idea.
The electronics is a work of art,its so simple.If you start the engine with the CDL engaged the TC/ABS is disabled by the computer.If you wish to retain TC/ABS you need to unlock the CDL before turning the engine off(or stalling :oops: :oops: :oops: :oops: )If you lock the CDL with the engine running the CDL light on the dash comes on and the TC/ABS remains active.There are also links on the same site telling how to wire a switch to turn the TC/ABS on/off.

They made it flash upgradable, and also added an additional fuel map into the system. I'm pretty sure at around that time the injection pressures were also increased.
