    Head bolt sequence?

BMW mechanic I was talking to sujested that my head might have been torqued wrong so that when it cools it draws air in (He has had a couple of beamers where this was the prob with the cooling system where nobody could find the fault. Only leeks when sitting overnight so doesn't reg as a head prob). Solution he foud was to check the bolts again. When I looked up my manuals it says to do it in sequence but didn't say what the seqister as uence was.

    Torque sequence.

Strange how nobody seems to have the torque sequence for the TD5 ?
(Of course neither do I - my RAVE covers TDi). But I was looking on the web -since there were no replies - and apparantly the Td5 is based on the L series of engine blocks ie freelander.

    http://www.web-rover.co.uk/nav.php?p=td5kb...db6e3313cfbaea3

RAVE says there is the normal start in the centre and work outward pattern for bolts 1 to 10 (logically then 11 and 12 on yours). The stages however are really strict- 30nm-65nm-+90degrees-+another 90 degrees.

And the L series cylinder head bolts have to be 243.41 mm exactly or all get replaced.

If you can confirm that the sequence is the same, shouldn't hurt to loosen in reverse sequence and re-torque - might even check how long the bolts are suposed to be. At least you'll know it was done properly anyway.

At the very least you now know you aint being ignored

Thanks for that guys. Problem with the bolts are they are stretch type so use once and at $28 each it gets costly fast. Mechanic sujested just open up rockercover and check each one is sequence and if tight leave for now otherwise tighten and then see what happens. He also sujested that if any were not right that it would be worth removing and changing the gasket as well.

I've got to add it's never a good idea to re-tension head bolts. You have absolutely no idea when to stop tightening or how consistent the torque is between each bolt. Do it properly or not at all is my philosophy.

I'm not keen to play in there but the comment I was given was that they would be obvious if loose so check with the torque wrench and otherwise leave alone. Or as you guys said go the whole hog with new bolts and gasket. I would rather not crack it open at all. playing with heads can be a real pain.
