How do you make suction caps stick

Yeah, so far nothing beats RAM.
Insanely sturdy mount system, even with a heavy PDA or tablet hanging off a long stem.

As for magnetic phone holder: brother tried a few... I've tried a few, but so far the most immovable for me has been a BFC magnetic and Qi charger.
When clean, it holds the phone over any terrain without question.
Problem is that both phone and holder needs to be clean of dust, so that there is no slippage between phone and holder.

Qi charging is brilliant. no more tangling up of cables and stuff.
Phone need an ugly cover on the phone for both the magnetic ring for the magnetic holder and also the Qi charger thingybob and cover needs to be smooth and shiny surface on the rear holding side. I have a clear type which when clean has a grippy feel to it.

The mount system that comes in the BFC kit is pretty useless. But it's easy to mount their holder head bit to almost any 4 pronged quick release holder. I used double sided tape to mount their quick fit mount holder onto the end of the RAM mount.

phone sticks over extremely rough roads taken at any speed, and if not, then it's only a matter of cleaning the dust off the face of the holder and the back of the phone. That's the only thing that limits how well this holder holds onto the device .. cleanliness of the interface.
My phone is an LG 6"... fairly heavy unit too.

Do you clean your windscreen (inside) with any sort of product containing silicon? If so that needs to be properly cleaned off, dishwasher soap usually doesn't cut it.

A roofers best friend. The humble can of Rid insect repellent. Not only does it bring back my Dunlop Volleys. Has worked wonders on the window suction cups. (Just keep from all moulded plastics) just on the cup side and allow to fully evaporate.

Real words of wisdom here, most young gun roofers don't even know about Volleys, let alone the 'refreshment' technique.

Must ask a real old hand if he knows of this at golf tomorrow. He buys Volleys in bulk.

Hi All,

Had several Garmin GPS suction mounts (just thought the first one was getting a bit old, but then the new one fell off 3 times in the first 2 km after 1 month). Bought a RAM mount 6 months ago and still there.

Have you tried or seen the type of mobile phone holder that has a suction cup that you don't need to moisten with anything at all?
I have one of these, and it has quite a soft suction cup that you press gently against the inside of the windscreen and then operate a small lever that pulls the centre of the cup away from the glass.

A holder of this type might be worth a try if you find one: I've never had it fall off.
In fact, the edge of the suction cup has a tab that you pull to break the suction seal, after releasing the lever, when you want to take it down.
Mine was made by Motorola (and is no longer available), but there may be others out there that operate the same way.

Just a different approach that could be worth considering.

Hi Andrew - that is exactly what I already have - they do not need to be moistened but they stay stuck longer if they are.

Was at the shops yesterday and found a very very thick detergent so testing that on one sucker that normally falls off after a couple of days.

I bought a RAM suction cup mount for my Garmin GPS 10 years ago and it fell off from new no matter what I did. In the end I tied a piece of string around the rear view mirror to catch it when it fell. I thought it was the curve of the windscreen but if falls off it you attach it to a window in the house.

This is my setup.
