What was in my transfer case?

My transfer case on my 1993 disco (v8 auto) has been whining for a while. So using the articles aroung here I replaced the fluid.20180112_144750.jpg
What I drained out looked dark purple almost red. Like crushed red grapes. I thought "That's where the wine is!"
Jokes aside, what did I drain from the transfer case??

I can only guess by the looks of that that it had some transmission fluid in it, mixed with who knows what.

    I'm guessing Redline Shockproof?
Syntrax (now Syntrax Universal) was red too.
    Royal Purple is....purple!

It could be any number of fluids, a number are coloured red, it's just a dye after all.

So the odd colour shouldn't be an indication of incorrect fluid then?
    was worried damage was done.
Refilled with Castrol 80w 90, with Morleys Oil stabiliser, swapped the wine for honey!

I often wonder myself, you buy a certain viscosity oil then change the viscosity by adding a bottle of treacle to it?

Worse than that Mario, it dilutes the additive package in the oil you've added it to.

Moreys and it's ilk are just a high molecular weight base oil, nothing more, with no real EP or AW component to them.

I added it because of all the recommendations it the tech discussions on this forum. Is supposed to run components cooler, according to the expert sounding people on here

Should I drain it out and re fill with straight gear oil?

While I have great respect for Ricks advice on all things oil I did have this experience back in the 1980s. I worked for a company running Unimogs in the NT where they had to run long distances at high speed in heat. Bull gears on the Portal Axles were failing very regularly resulting in noise and expense. Many different oils were tried and nothing cut it the old Dutch mechanic we had mixed Moreys with the oil at a ratio that I cant remember and it solved the issue. Of note was the fact that if we put too much in it just overheated the Portals but if we kept the ratio right the problem was solved. Oil technology has probably come a long way since then but at the time it was the answer.
