Can anyone tell me what this bolt head is? RRC starter motor

So i'm in the middle of removing the Starter motor on a '85 RR Classic. All the others i've seen have a hex socket head and then I come across this. I should have cleaned it better before taking the photo, but in case anyone can help me identify it before going back to where the car is, so i can take the correct tools! The 13mm traditional socket seemed to fit OK, but slipped, and nothing else in my (limited) toolbox seemed to fit on it. I don't think it is simply a rounded head, because you can see the rounded edges and then indentations between each..

It looks like a "Torx" bolt to me, you will need a special socket to remove it without damaging it

What Tombie said - a 12 point head. Ordinary sockets won't work.
I think they slip them in here and there for a laugh - funny bastards ain't they!

Thanks all for responses. Yep, i'll get myself a 12 point socket and give the bolt head a good clean before attempting.

its a strange choice to use that bolt, since the Starter is actually pretty new and replaced in last few years.

Now breaking the bolt free is the next challenge with limited space/leverage. I've read and re-read all the suggested ways to help get the starter bolts out and i'm not looking forward to this weekend!

    Cheers, Tim

These bolts can be a PITA and you need the right tools But they are better than a standard bolt because the socket gets a better grip on the bolt

Looks well rounded, take a 1/2 inch 12 point with you as well ( bit smaller) just in case

Long extension with a "wobble" end. You'll usually get about 1/8 of a turn at a time!

Could be worse - I recall doing my block a few times over 6 cyl Torana starters!

Looks to me like a very worn 12 point. You might have to resort to butchery if the proper socket slips.
    Good luck.

The bolt is most likely a Discovery 2 V8 exhaust manifold bolt complete with torque sleeve. A 12mm 12 point socket or ring spanner is the correct fit from memory. I was surprised to find a metric head on a 3/8" SAE bolt, but that's the magic of Land Rovers...
