It might be a bit more common in Defenders, and I’m not a mechanic, but it seems it can happen to any brand. ...these problems sound pretty common in Toyotas to over the years

20km from home at the end of a 5 week touring trip i lost 3rd gear. Spoke to specialist gearbox mechanic today. Could be a failed syncro or stripped gearset. Find out next week when the box is opened up. Was told that LR use quality bearings but use a synco with a gap between teeth that can slip and fail. The Ranger and Mustang MT82 use chinese made bearings (crap was the words used) but a better gear and syncro set up.
The plan is to rebuild the box with the best of available parts. Bloody defender has bled me dry over the past 6 months.
Gearboxes can and do fail in any vehicle but I think overall the MT82 box in the Defender is pretty good.
While I have done dozens of clutches and adapter shafts, I only changed out my first starter motor on a Defender 2.4TDCi (puma) today.

Daz
