Fuel Pump Whine in TD5 Disco

Fuel pump whine. My fuel pump continually whines loudly. Usual thing is to have a small whine when the ignition is first turned on, but this is continuous now. I filled up a day previously with bio diesel from SAFF and was wondering if the sudden change of weather to fairly cold has affected the fuel and hence giving the fuel pump a hard time is the fuel pump about to go to the big refinery in the sky? Any checks I can do before the mechanic gets it and I have to remorgage the house?

Are you sure it's the fuel pump and not the centrifugal oil filter? The centrifugal oil filter is the one that whines at the END when you turn the engine off. Not sure about what causes the noise at the START though (I vaguely recall that it's the fuel pump....) Look on the forum and you'll see that people have had a similar problem when they use non-genuine (LR) centrifugal oil filters....

    Just worth checking I suppose.

and as you said you put biodiesel in the tank....
this will clean out the lines and could possibly have blocked the filter.....</span>

How old and how many kms have you done?

I hope it is just a blocked filter, but mine is doing the same and after speaking with a few people, seems to be common for them to moan and groan before the give up the ghost.

Just in the process of pricing a new one 8O LRA want something like $1400. The best I have found is Karcraft at $800. I will buying one soon, at least as a spare until this one finally says no more.

I have only done 90K so I hope the fuel pumps ok. I have a spare filter so that was going to be the first step. I normally run bio when around the city so the system should be clean. I have heard the bio can thicken up if it gets too cold so I thought they may not have the cold weather mix going yet.

murray -- as Zook said the bio-diesel is known to clean out the lines and cause a blockage in the filter. If it has only started as a result of the filter change, then it is probably just that. Good luck and let us know how you go.
