Mine is 1997 MY ES, but then it is not an Australian market car. It also has(or had)cats, and still has O2 sensors.

Mines an Australian built 96 ES with twin airbags (First 4wd with driver and passenger airbags according to the sticker still on the back window).

The propellent in airbags is sodium azide which is fairly stable and would degrade over time to nitrogen gas I believe. It will not form less stable forms like other explosives.
The concern I have is more over the 20 year old wiring and possibly the ignitor circuit.

I was thinking the same thing when I hit a Kangaroo on Wednesday in my 2001 PT Cruiser , (no damage , thats one solid car)
Being American its chockers full of airbags.

Hmm. I seem to recall doing some research on this while considering a body lift. IIRC, the lift was OK on the D1 as the bags were an option, but not on the D2 as they weren't. Don't quote me, as fading memory may be failing me.

I have the same sticker on mine. Pretty sure mine is built in uk, 95; but first registered in Aus in 96. Not sure what model type exactly but it’s basic, cloth seats, no roof bars or sunroof. Might just need to get in touch with VicRoads and see

Mine's a late 1995 V8 build and doesn't have airbags, or ABS, though it did come with factory alloys, auto trans, tow bar, bull bar and LR driving lights fitted as optional extras.
