As long as there is no underlying issue causing bad economy in the first place then a mild remap will improve drivability lots and economy a little. The economy won't improve until after happy week when you first get the remap and settle back down to normal driving habits......if that ever happens
Other things such as improved turbo, freer exhaust ,bigger intercooler will all help with efficiency.
If yours is late 2001 you may have a nnn flashable ecu, this will give more options.

My 2002 EU3 auto just did 9lper100km at 110 Kmh on the cruise Sydney to Melbourne.( with a bit of tailwind and about 10C granted).
Several mods which I will not mention here, including big intercooler and the usual other stuff. Looks like about 9.5 on the return trip but it is uphill from Mexico.
I think good on cruise at 110Kmh. I would be making fuel at 95Kmh.
I think a 2001 is EU2 so not so easy to chip.

If you have an EU2 motor without the NNN ecu things are more complicated
In my case no mapping makes my fuel consumption better as I drive with a pretty heavy light foot.
Many claim that changed tuning results in more power and better consumption I have never been a witness to this though.

some chips just dump more fuel in for more power don't they? if so then economy would be less?

I have been thinking about this a bit.

Chipping, large intercooler, upped boost etc tends to reduce the need for flat accelerator and thus the auto stays in lock up longer on the highway. In my recent trip to Melbourne the auto did not drop out of lockup once even up grades like before Picton Road turnoff.

Chipping will use more fuel at large accelerator opening, but at the same speed should be the same as a stock car.

I think that things like EGR delete , modified exhaust , upped boost and bigger intercooler will reduce pumping losses from restriction and liberate a bit more power from a given input of fuel.

I would be interested to hear any results from Extrude Honing inlet, head ports and exhaust manifold or just plain free flowing the head as this could also reduce pumping losses. Great results in petrol engines and the manifolds on the TD5 are really crude.

    Well....

I spent the best part of two days porting a 300Tdi head because, well, I just can't help myself.

The bum dyno said it was better and i consistently achieved butter fuel economy after the mods but I'm really only guessing as too much else was changed at the same time, ie. injectors, pistons, rings, etc.

Mine is chipped, intercooled, boost boxed and overweight with every reason to not slip through the air... or slip through anything for that matter. It uses more fuel than the Exxon Valdez.
    Cheers

WOW that's a big call more than the EXXON Valdez, hope it doesn't leak oil like the Exxon did.
