    JacMac vs Maxi

OK -- we are starting to do some homework on a rear locker for 'Kimba'.

After doing some initial pricing, there is a couple of hundred dollars difference between an ARB (+maxi axles) and a full maxi setup (fitted). My preference is a maxi over ARB+maxi.

Speaking to JacMac the other day and he is pretty much line ball with Maxi in terms of pricing(JacMac air locker + 31 spline axles). JacMac seems to be a much simpler fitting than the Maxi.

Interested to hear from people with respect to the various benefits of JacMac versus a Maxi (strenght, operation etc).

    Thanks in advance

I have no experience with a Jac Mac rear locker but I have had a Maxi in the rear of my 300tdi Defender for a long time. Mine was fitted by Graeme Cooper, yes it does require the diff centre to be sent to Maxi HQ in qld to be machined. And a hole needs to be cut in the top of the diff axle housing to mount the actuator. Result, a very strong and reliable locker. It has always worked, and I have never heard of one breaking, although I am sure some stuntman has somewhere. The thing I like about it is its super solid from wheelnut to wheelnut. Flanges, axles the lot. ARB make a good compressor for blowing up tyres!

Which ever way you go you will not believe the difference a rear locker will make to the already great ability of the mighty defender.

    Maxis

I have had Maxis for years and have had no problems we run maxi rock crawler gear sets as well with the same reliability. The big difference is the build quality and the back up you get with the product. Mal is more than happy to help with any problem no matter how small.

You get what you pay for.

I think JacMac builds the best lockers over Maxi and ARB. Everything is contained within the axle housing so there are no actuators to potentially get damaged when stuck and backing into a rock, and a reduced change of anything ingress due to no external actuator unlike the Maxi. There are no seals to wear like in the ARB also. Also, there is no chance you will break the 31 spline axles ever and they are a lot stronger than even the Maxidrive ones which are smaller.

The problem with JacMac is that Jeff there can be really difficult to deal with, though if you can sidestep him then you're laughing.

BTW I have nothing against Maxi or ARB, I have ARB lockers and Maxi axles/CV's front and rear.
    Cheers

    best design JAC MAC
    next maxi

    then arb.

jacmac is fully contained in the diff housing.
does not have external actuator (maxi)
Does not have oring type seal (arb)

either JM or maxi is the go.

And Maxi Drive is up for sale as a business as Mal is retiring so who knows what the new owners will be like to deal with.

i have had no experience with lockers or having them fitted on previous rigs, just so happens the defender that i brought last year has front and rear arb lockers fitted.

the only problem i have had is the air line to the front locker had rubbed a hole, i now have a repair kit onboard for next time as it failed me on a tough run at landcruiser park, the locker still engaged however but the compressor ran continiously

which ever brand you go with they are a great addition to your rig, i'm not into the extreme off road stuff but the good part about lockers is you do not have to drive the rig as hard therefore less punishment on tyres/drivetrain etc.
