County recovery points

The question on eye bolts or eye nuts has prompted this post.

My County has the oriignal bull bar (and side steps ) supplied with the County when delivered new. There are no recovery points so I will probably go the eybolt route (which is what my ARB bar had on my old Rangie).

However, what have other County owners done at the back? The usual response id to use the pin in the tow bar.

However, my County has the type of towbar that has a vertical square tube bolted to the rear crossmember in which slides a vertical square bar with the tongue welded horizontally to the bottom. The usual pin locks the bar in place (and allows one to change the height of the tongue).

Obviously I can't connect the snatch strap to the pin as the strap would bend around a corner and up into the tube.

I don't have a rear recovery point, but I would be inclined to make up an attachment consisting of a pair of 10mm plates each with two holes, one for the pin, and the other with a 20mm bolt through it clamping a suitable length of heavy wall pipe the same length as the OD of the square tube.

The "correct" rear recovery points, from my reading are similar gadgets replacing the two tie down points on the rear chassis.

In both cases, better than the heavy wall pipe would be a turned hourglass shape - you can get it stronger for less weight.

I got a rear recovery point from TJM yesterday which is intended to fit a Nissan, but the bolt holes are prefectly aligned for the rear cross member "nut holes". Nicely made. Rated.

$75, which is a bit steep but for lack of mucking around it is a quick fix.

It bolts on to the top 4 bolts of the 6 where you have your towbar, so it may not work for you if you need to keep your towbar attached.

I took of my towbar 'cause I use my Disco for towing and it dragged along the ground on steep inclines. It only takes about 2 minutes to bolt it on though, so I guess I could swap from recovery point to towbar pretty quickly.

hey ron....if you were to drill a hole in the bit of the hitch sticking out the top
of the receiver there
.....and fit a shackle and strap.....would the mounting bolts be strong enough
to take the loads of a snatch recovery....?

Tow Point

I use a ex army "d" hook that were on the front of the Ser 3 Landies. I welded two 8mm side plates so it slips over the tube arrangement already there. There are two holes drilled in these side plates that match up with the existing holes.( I can only see one on your County)
So, come 4wd time I drop out the towbar and slip over the bracket with "D" hook and replace the two bolts ( I had to get longer high tensile bolts)
No loss of ground clearance, nice big hook ( actually the d) and very simple and strong.

Dunno if it would put too high a load on the top bolts. What about fitting this into the receiver?
