    As per his final quote.
    DO AT YOUR OWN RISK

i have asked 2 LR mechanics who know there stuff and they dont recommend this. TDC is the prefered location.
But you make your own choices in life. I prefer the Vanilla

I have a 98TDi manual and can get 140-150/hr when required.

How is the overall condition of your engine? Does it use oil?

I have a set of 31in muddies in the shed that i use for off roading on weekends, when they are on the car it drives like a slug, i dont try to go anymore that 100 because they are only retreads so cant really say. Matt

Thanks very much for that - however that is not something I would attempt, especially with the warnings attached!

    Ace,
The engine is low km (115k) and does not use oil (well it seems to use a small amount after about 4-5 thousand, just before I change it). I reckon it is in top order, has a good service hsitory. I suspect i would exercise my demons if I put on a set of standard size wheels/tyres and experienced the difference. You describe it to a T, with 31's on it is a slug. Thing is, I need the clearance that the 31's provide.

Hows old Lithgow going - I lived there in the late 80's and as a result, moved to Queensland to get my circulation going again! Wish I had of bought some land around Hartley(had the opportunity)-but I was a povo at the time. NOw I am in Vic.

Mate mine uses a bit of oil aswell around the 5000km mark i have been flat out at the moment and the car is 2000km overdue for the service when i checked the oil it had use a bit, dont know if thats normal or not, must be.

I find the performance to be quit good with the 30in tyres, but put the muddies on and she dies in the arse up hills. You might be able to look into changing the gearing if you really wanted it sorted, it would improve your economy aswell.

Lithgow is fine, still freakin cold. I will be out of here at the end of the year, headed to the riverina for a bit of a change. Matt

Lindsay, fair enough about your concern but I do think it would pay to have the timing checked as you certainly would have been through a timing belt change (depends of course on who did it)
Mine ('97) has 180000 km. and in the course of 7-8000 km. (when I change the oil and filter) it drops about 5mm on the dipstick. It has been on a diet of Mobil super 15-40 since new.
Now due for next belt change, but when I did it the first time I put a 1/2" bsp plug in the front of the timing case so that I can inspect the belt regularly. It is still tracking perfectly so no immediate concern.

mine was using 5-600ml of oil over 10,000km, and I finally found why. Three valve stem seals had ridden up the bloody valve stems off the guide posts. I've levered them down several times since, but it looks like a remove retainer and spring job and replace the buggers, more than likely the whole set.

    300 tdi speed

My 300 tdi defender would do 140 km/hr with a full roof rack when it was fully standard., I did it once or twice passing a truck.

I nearly soiled my pants when i looked down and saw the speedo, I might have even seen 145 km/hr without the roof rack, but for me 99% of the time 100-110 is plenty quick enough for the tdi. ( and my license)
    cheers simmo

145kph GPS in a 200tdi 90, over half a mil on the clock, FULLY LOADED, double stacked roof rack and rear load area tetris stacked to the ceiling with two vehicles worth of kit. Downhill with wind in the sails. Felt planted, more stable than I have ever experienced unloaded. Had acres of dual carriage way ahead with no traffic to be seen for miles. HD springs, stiff shocks. Brief speed test.

I find 110kph can be maintained up moderate inclines but it sweats uphill.

Cant hold a 130kph speed limit on inclines
