I've also got to the point of thinking "washers". Bugger. After all this set were fitted as part of my "Great Head Replacement Adventure" so I've no faith in the fitting of the current washers and o-rings. There's a couple of threads concerning that whole sorry saga. I just knew that I should've got washers and O-rings redone while I was in Alice Springs a couple of months ago. There IS a trustworthy indy in Morwell so I'll either get him to do it or do it myself. Successful retrieval of my torque wrench, time and space permitting of course.
Fuel leak is the first item on the agenda though.

The block that the fuel filter screws into can get porous and as mentioned there is a valve in there. Check if the filter block looks damp. Then the fuel pressure regulator on the rear drivers side of the engine. Check for diesel there also. If your washers need replacing the fuel will be in the sump so you should be able to smell that on the dipstick or see the level is up.
Also ensure that there are not 2 'O' ring seals on the fuel filter. I know of a case where the old seal was not removed when changing the filter and after a while with 2 seals fitted they began to leak.

Well it looks very much like I'm facing two issues here.
The fuel filter is leaking around the top where it screws in so a new filter and o-ring should fix that.
The other issue is a bit more serious. After a few high mileage days the oil level has risen ever so slightly therefore washers and O-rings are well and truly in the frame especially when coupled with the other symptoms.
Looks like those incompetent fools that did the head replacement failed to fit the washers and O-rings properly (five times). I'd dearly love to take it back to them and tell them to fix it but they've proven that they can't be trusted to do the job right. There's a trusted indy in Morwell who I'll take it to and while he's at it he can do the oils and filters as well.
To say I'm annoyed about the rising oil level would be a considerable understatement.
