Well "I bit the bullet" and pulled it out.I dont think Landrover could of made the job any tougher if they tried.
The news is all good, filled the intercooler with petrol swished it around let it sit for 1/2 hour swished it around again and tipped it out, slightly oil coloured, repeated with fresh petrol and it came out clean. It helps my faith in the motor being in good nick.
The best outcome is I was able to properly get the Harvey mud out of the cores,intercooler1/4 blocked, aircon condensor 1/3 blocked, gearbox cooler 1/2 blocked and radiator 1/4 blocked. There is a lot of dried mud and dead inscects on the shed floor 8) 8) 8) 8) .
A job well worth doing in my case.
Now I have to head back down the shed and put it all back together      .

At least its easy to remove in the defenders. I might have to do mine once I am up and about.

Hi Guys
For those Disco2 owners,I didnt remove the fan/viscous coupling, there is JUST enough room to get the bugger out 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
I did remove the battery as I think its stuffed and the tray as it was full of all sorts of poo,the bolts were rusting!!!!!

I am thinking, next time i take mine out I may tap a hole into the bottom of the intercooler tank and fit a drain plug. When flushing remove drain plug and put in hose piece and a small in line valve. Fiil up and let sit, drain, clean againa nd drain and refit drain plud. Would save removing the intercooler form the vehicle. Would only have to take off the grill.
Just a thought.

Guys -- with the Defender do you also need to remove the radiator to get the intercooler out? Or can you just remove the grill and unbolt from the radiator and unclip air hose??
Interested in giving mine a clean out based on the improvement LandyAndy has seen.
Thanks in advance

Hi Noddy
From what Ive heard the Defender is mutch easier job than the Disco.I didnt think much gunk came out of the internals, but i guess soaked in petrol(full intercooler) it wouldnt have showed as much as a small amount.
Im thinking the Harvey mud blocking the core along with bugs has led to the biggest improvement.
Cant explain being able to hear the turbo now, perhaps there was internal blockages???The old air filter was stuffed so the new one would also contribute to an improvement.

Oh Crap
I should have done this when I had the chance as well. I had some panel work done on the fron of my car in Dec which inloved removing grill, lights etc I took the chance to get my radiator taken out, opened up and cleaned but did not think about the intercooler.
In Jan I did a 10K trip east and back and noticed I had some oil leaking out of the intercooler exit hose that was not 100% tight
I guess its normal to have some oil in the intercooler though? no matter how often you clean it.

Hi John
Yes its normal to have some oil build-up,it comes from the breathers that are plumbed into the system,to be "re-burnt" by the motor.
