300Tdi - changing big ends - what else should I replace whilst sump is off?

    Hi all

1998 300Tdi 130 with 310,000kms on the clock. I have noticed a rattle at high revs (above 2800rpm) and I am suspecting the big ends. Motor runs sweet at all other times.

I will order a set of bearing shells, but what else can I replace while the sump is off? Thrust washers?

    Thanks
    Andrew

I would doubt that is it. Bigs ends at 2800 would not make a rattle. Rattles are low frequency noises. Signs of big end wear would be low oil pressure.

Ok maybe I should rephrase to a knocking sound.

I didn't think I can change main bearing shells with engine still in car.

    Cheers

You can. You drop a cap and use a split pin bent into a t-shape. Drop the eye into the journal oil hole and hand crank the engine in the appropriate direction and the shell winds out. New one goes in in the reverse direction.

Knocking on the over-run at revs?

    Big ends.

and low oil pressure, particularly at idle.

At those km they'll be due anyway.

So I finally had some time yesterday afternoon to start disassembly in preparation to replace the bearing shells.

Drop oil, sump off and hmmmmm.

Hopefully tonight I'll get some time to start removing the caps to reveal the shells.

If that is what you found in the sump you should be pulling the engine for a complete inspection. You are likely going to need to regrind the crankshaft. There might be a damaged rod where the bearing let go needing resizing or replacing.
