SAAS Gauges for Series Land Rover

    Hello All,

Just wondering whether anyone has separate SAAS gauges for temperature, oil pressure and amps? Are they reliable and do they last?

A couple of my Series Land Rovers came with the three gauge "specials" from an el-cheapo autoparts store. These must have been purchased a decade or two ago. There is little surprise that the majority of these gauges do not work.

I am looking at paying around $80 for each of the following separate gauges: temperature, oil pressure and amp. Apart from SAAS what gauges would you recommend that would look compatible in a Series Land Rover?

Size is approximately 50 mm in diameter.

The original Smiths type gauges though highly desirable are more of a luxury item than what I want at the moment.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Probably a bit more than you want to spend but I can highly recommend Speedhut gauges. Great quality, customisable and easy to deal with - they will hurt your wallet though.

above budget but Speedhut USA make custom gauges to suit ,. I have their GPS speedo

They also make a quad gauge with fuel / oil / temp/volts for the left side.

(oh Homestar beat me to it )

    Hello GoingBush and Homestar,

Thank you for recommending SpeedHut gauges. My two vehicles in question have not earned their keep to a sufficient level to warrant such an expense at this stage.

I will keep the SpeedHut gauges in mind once the vehicle's status have changed.

I had a full set of fully refurbished Smiths gauges in an EH Holden which I kept with the car when I sold it in the 1990s. They were mounted in an after-market holder that connected to the dash's central speaker grille. Hmm make that the only speaker!

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Gauges Mechanical or Electrical

    Hello All,

I have noticed that a number of companies offer oil pressure and temperature gauges in a choice of either "mechanical" or "electrical".

Now for the questions: Is one type better than the other? What advantage does one type have over the other option?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Voltage Stabiliser

    Hello All,

Apart from the original style Land Rover Series 2 3 Dash Board instrument Voltage Stabiliser; what other - more modern versions are available?

The old style voltage stabiliser is shown in the attached photograph.

Would I be correct in thinking that the addition of four gauges: Water Temperature, Oil Pressure, Voltage, Ammeter would require a new voltage stabiliser system?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Series Land Rover gauges

    Lionel,

    Have you considered VDO gauges?
Their range is great and they are closer to OEM than SAAS, unless you want the "bling"
I have used them on 2 vehicles and found them to be high quality and cheaper than SAAS.
You can buy soild state voltage stabilisers (Ebay) for about $25. I have used 2 and they both worked well.

Don’t run any new gauges off the 10 volt supply that the voltage stabiliser supplies - run them straight from a good 12 volt supply. Don’t bother with an ammeter unless there’s a particular reason you want it - run the alternator supply straight to the battery.

If you do want a new voltage reg for the factory gauges - zap me your address and I’ll post you something up - it is a solid state unit that solders into the existing housing - I bought a pack of 5 for a few dollars and still have 4 sitting here. 👍

    From the US of A

    Hello All,

I decided on getting a triple gauge set from Auto Meter from their Auto Gage Series. The set was available in Australia including postage for less than $140 Australian. This was less expensive than buying them direct from the USA supplier and paying for their flat rate postage.

The Auto Meter site describes the gauges as made in ... Sycamore, Illinois, The Auto Gage line of instruments provide the best bang for the buck performance in the industry. For a fast street car or a weekend racer, Auto Gage provides levels of accuracy and durability unheard of in the price category. With countless wins in magazine comparison tests, the best value in gauges comes from exactly the place you’d expect it to ... AutoMeter (accessed 15th January 2019 from, GAUGE CONSOLE, OILP/WTMP/VOLT, 1.5", 100 PSI/280 degF/18V, ELEC BLK DIAL, BLK BZL, AG).

Auto Meter makes a wide range of gauges for different markets. I liked the colours it reminded me of my old Smiths Econo Gauge.

Now all that is left is to see how they go... fingers crossed.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Mechanical gauges have a direct connection to what ever you want to monitor, ie: a small tube to bring the actual oil to the gauge, or a similar capillary tube filled with a conducting fluid for temperature.

Electric gauges use a sensor, usually a variable resistor, that the instrument converts to what ever is required on the face of the scale.

Mechanical gauges are usually a bit more accurate, but it is not a good idea to run a hot oil line from an engine into the cab!

Some types of electric gauges require a voltage stabiliser, but most not. And some sensors, particular those designed for marine use, or insertion into a non-conducting mounting, have two terminals to complete a separate earth circuit.
