    1995 Defender 130 Aircon

Attaching photos of the aircon knobs in my Defender. My wife complained about the aircon the other day. From what I can see it only has three outlets a bit above knee height and it appears that I cannot adjust the aircon air to vent out of the openings below the windscreen.

As far as the knobs go, one of them is the fan speed with three speed settings but it is the inner one that I wish to enquire about; the one that activates the aircon. I did not have it on fully to the 7.00 o’clock position, only about 3.00 o’clock, thus the complaints from my wife that the cabin was not getting cold.

The blue line suggests it goes from minimum to maximum. However, what actually happens when I turn that knob further around; what does it activate? I am a bit limited in knowledge on car air conditioning. I note the compressor and the condenser and that it needs to be filled with a non-ozone reducing gas but that is about it.

So what happens in the unit when I advance that aircon knob??

Mine is a '97 model, but the air con is the same as yours. There is a three speed fan switch, and the other control make the air con cooler as it is advanced clockwise. I was told by a local auto-lec not to advance that temperature control past the point where it produces 6˚C at the pax vent. To do so would risk freezing the thing up which would result in loss of cooling. At about the 3 o'clock position, my temp control produces 6˚C at that air vent. If your system is known to be in good nick and it's not cooling when cranked up to full, turn it down and see what happens, or turn it off for a while, then back on at a lower setting.
Let us know how you get on.
