Question Rover diffs: Truetrac different front and rear but Ashcroft Transmissions ATB same-sa

Out of interest, anyone know why Eaton's Detroit TrueTracs are different depending on front or rear application yet the Ashcroft Transmission ATB seem to be the same regardless?

E.g. the Eaton catalogue < http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/publ.../ct_128302.pdf > on p. 12 lists 912A407 for front application of Rover Type 24 spline diffs and 912A383 for the rear.
This is also the case if purchasing the Eaton product from Ashcroft as you select front or rear from the drop down box when ordering < Ashcroft Transmissions>.

The equivalent ATB < Ashcroft Transmissions> makes no mention of being specific for one or the other or option to select.

The side gears only have a thrust bearing on the inside. When you drive the side gears thrust in one direction. Truetracs are setup so they they thrust in when driving forward. If you put them in he other way you would get wear over the long term.

You can change the Truetracs from front to rear by swapping the gears from side to side.

As above, Ashcroft ATB only come in 24 spline , Truetrac are available in 24 or 10 spline , So if you want to do a 10 spline front the only option is Truetrac unless you can obtain 24sp front axles ( no so easy in a Series )

So why don’t the Ashcroft ATB’s suffer that issue?

Two different types of trutrac available ,the earlier one was front or rear depending how you set the gears the other one is preloaded and is suitable front or rear as is.I have been running a preloaded unit in the front for over 5 years and modified it to be fully locking but never use it as it does so well unlocked

    According to Dave Ashcroft:

    Hi,

I think the difference between front and rear on the Truetracs is due to the rear having more preload than the front,

    Dave
I expected a bit more detail and not 'I think' given they designed and developed their own alternative and must have analysed the TrueTrac in depth to have done so...

Difference between front and rear TruTracs (apart from the thrust direction on earlier models) is torque bias ratio. Essentially the fronts don't "lock" as much as the rears. From memory it is around 2-2.5 for the fronts and something like 3-3.5 for the rears. TBH I have a front in my D1 and a mate has a swapped-gears rear in his front, same D1 model. I can't pick a difference really. Both good
