Hi all
I have been chasing an oil leak at the back of my 300Tdi engine (1998 Defender)
Located it to where the pipe (in my case it's a braided hose) that goes between the engine breather and the large air tube/duct (runs between the air filter and turbo)
All i had time to do on the weekend was tighten the hose clamp, but there was not much left to tighten.
Therefore I suspect a split in a hose somewhere.
Upon googling this hose (LLH500200) i can only find a plan rubber hose or a silicone hose, not a braided hose like original - is this the case?
Secondly, am I able to fit some sort of filter/catch can to trap this oil at this point?
Thanks
Andrew

Mine's a D1, but I was seeing oil leaks along the driver side of the engine block.
Fixed the vacuum pump(sealed up the core plugs on the body), fixed the leaks at the oil pressure sender, but still had oil coming from the RHS of the motor. Turned out to be the hoses in and out of the cyclone breather, their ends hardened.
I replaced with silicon hoses(basically same price), and now I can clearly see that my last oil leak point is the oil pump(o ring at the thermostat housing).
Much reduced now tho, and haven't had the time or space to fix yet.
Note, if you do go silicon hoses, they may not fit perfectly straight up, and may need to have a few mils trimmed of their ends to fit nicely. I prefer that, rather than fighting too short hoses!
I understand that your leak is at the rear, but another thing that can leak on the RHS of the motor is the o ring on the cyclone itself where it's bolted to the head. It hardens and flattens over time. I just fitted a std o ring from a cheap o ring pack I've had for years, stopped that leak.
If you think it's the hose split that goes around the rear of the block, get yourself some sealing tape and tape it up to see if this is the issue.
You could use some self amalgamating tape, or sealer tape.
I just got onto some sealing tape from Bunnings, Gorilla sealing tape. I used it in my shower to stop water from leaking between the gapless frameless shower. Amazing stuff. Be warned if you try it tho, once on, basically impossible to get it off something like a rubber hose.
I mucked up my initial straight line run on glass, and had a hell of a time trying to get it off to re-do it properly. I can't imagine it would peel off something like rubber tho.
Note there are many types of these sealing tapes, many of them are black(butyl).
I reckon before you spend money on a new hose that may or may not be the issue, just a quick 'hack' to confirm it could be wise.
See this Provent thread as a potential option
From what I've seen tho, most folks fit a provent in addition to the standard cyclone filter.
