Ok guys, one of the guys at work has a 1996 130 single cab ute. Apparently the speedo's stopped working.
His cousin's an auto electician and he told him that he'll need a new speedo, complete unit in the dash. Mind you he didn't really look at it.
My thoughts are that it would be something a little simpler.
Any clues as to the usual culprits?

Assuming it is pretty much the same as the earlier 90/110/130, and I suspect it is, the first suspect is the speedo cable, including the fittings at the end - last one I replaces the female fitting on one end of the inner cable was made of plastic and had simply disintegrated. Some cables are in two pieces, and can be replaced separately. It is possible that the drive gear is damaged, although this is unlikely. Another possibility is that the worm on the output shaft of the transfer case is slipping. This is only held by clamping with the nut on the output flange that carries the brake drum, and although it is a common problem on the Series speedo, I have not heard of it on the later models. In any case this usually shows up as erratic readings for a good while before it stops working altogether.
