Diff Oil vs Transfer Case Oil

I think I have a pinion seal leak in front diff of discovery 1 and want to check and top up / refill before going any further with replacing the seal.

Looked back through my records to find which oil is in the diff. Found that back in 2013 landrover replaced the diff and transfer case oils.
In general they used Texaco oils back then, and the two oils they listed were

    1. Synstar GL
    2. LSD 90

    Questions are :
Which of these two oils would have been used for the diff (so will be in my diff now) ?
What oil should I use today if topping up the diff ?
What oil should I use today if refilling the diff ?

    Hope this makes sense.

First up, it's easier to use the same oil in both just for commonality of fluids.
At a guess they've used the Synstar GL in the t/case and the SAE LSD90 in the diffs,, although an LSD fluid is waste of time in a Disco, they could've used the Synstar in both and you'd potentially get a small fuel economy increase.

Secondly, after 6 years dump them both and start afresh.
Regardless of km traveled in that time it deserves fresh fluids.
If only a relatively few number of km there's a fair chance you'll have moisture and oxidation and potentially acid issues, and if lot's of km additive depletion and oxidation plus contaminant levels will be a concern.

Use a good 75w-90 or 80w-90 GL5 oil and give them a birthday.

    Thanks Rick

    That's great advice.

I will replace the oil in the diffs. The truck has done 77K since 2013. I did replace the oil in the transfer case in Jan 2018 with Penrite mineral Gear Oil 80W-90.

Well I dropped the oil from the front diff when cold and just on 2 litres came out , so perhaps was overfilled by landrover?? Didn’t seem to be any water and colour is a dark grey.

Replaced it with exactly 1.7 litres of nice dark green stuff 😊

Naa, it's swivel hub 'One Shot' grease that has migrated into the diff.
The swivels get hot, pressurise and it blows past the seals.

You'll probably need to top off the swivels now, too.
