SubscriberI just founda hella work light and was thinking of mounting to the back as a reversing/work light thingy.Am thinking along the lines of splicing into the wiring for that fog light(that I never use) and just using it with the existing switch on the dash.Not intending to hook it to the reverse light as I just thought that if I needed extra light to reverse, hit the switch.Can anyone see any probs with this??As to just hooking up the pos and neg and using the existing earth.

Howdy: I have good news and bad news, as the old joke goes. I've got a disco, so using that as a guide, here it is:
My Fog lights are interconnected to the main lights. They'll only work with the headlamps on. Mixed blessings I suppose.
On my disco, the fog lights at the rear consist of two 20w bulbs, exactly like stop lamps, and red. I'm not sure if your rig has them connected or not. Generally not needed in mainland Australia. Your worklight is 55w, and the LR wiring can't handle the power requirment if the light is on for extended periods. It'll eventually melt the wires and short
Here is the good news: If you want to rig your worklight so it can be used try wiring it like a driving light. Run some twin cable that can handle 10amp from the battery all the way to the rear. Include a inline fuse at the battery end, and a drving light relay at the rear end. Splice off the positive wire (refer to RAVE) of the fog lights and that will accomplish what you want. The down side is that if you want to use it as a work light, then the headlamps have to be on.
As to regulations, you can hang most anything off your truck provided you don't use it on the road.
On my old Rangie I had somthing similar, but I used the rear window demist circuit - it could handle 20amp.

My understanding is the switch isn't allowed to be on the drivers side. I hooked up a set of spotlights under my tray. The switch is on my side and my Rego inspection went through with no problems though. The inspector was an old mechanic who loves 4WDing but.

I used the rear fog light wiring & switch on my disco
had a 55w worklight used it for years all good
yes not suposed to have switch but no one ever said anything in Vic (we don't have yearly inpsections)

On my Rangie I removed the standard 21w reverse light globes and fitted halogen 21w globes, of the kitchen downlight style. I had to modify the housing a little, but it isn't a difficult job. Now I have all the light I need for reversing, with slightly less load on the wiring.
