Look for ''Conoco'' their products are great I've swapped from Mobile1 oils,I get more power and longer life.Their mineral based oils are better than synthetics in most apps. Check Them out.

mark, as redback said with the cooler.
add an after market one this will lower the temps slowing down the breakdown of the oil.
the standard oil cooler in front of the radiator isnt that good. and after time it gets packed with mud, then it goes rusty.
a really good aftermarket cooler is worth its weight in gold.

    something like PWR or Earls.

as for fluid, i dont use castrol, but its hard to go past all the other comments. ide use B&M trick shift if it were mine.

    b4 the disco i used a 93 VR commodore v6 with a 4l60e auto to tow my
1.7t racecar and 700kg trailer around. the cooler helped for a while
but it wasent till i went to B&M trick shift auto fluid that i stoped burning
oil. i never put anything fancy in the disco, the only time i wished i had was towing an XD coon ute and two 351ci's up the towoomba range
auto in 2nd low, light came on at the top parking area but by that time i need to re fill the radiator anyway

    cheers phil

    Hi There,
May be a bit late in the piece to reply to this topic, ....but have direct experience in using TRANSMAX "Z" in a 94 model 300 tdi Auto.

We switched it over from the standard stuff around 100,000k's ago, which required an internal filter change, and flushing the converter with fresh synthetic ( suggest you buy a 20 litre drum). This gave a complete first change (approx12-13 litres sump/converter etc)...and the next change at 40,000 ks afterwards. We also fitted another oil cooler to supplement the factory one.
Things noticed since the change...(1) much smoother changes
    (2) improved ecomomy
*** and more importantly (3) when you change the oil next time, you do'nt find it burnt, or any funny smells from overheating....as we did with the old stuff when on steep off road climbs etc, when there's little or no air-flow over the coolers!!..........i think a few good ZF's have been buggered this way.
    hope this helps, cheers,

    Wayne
