2.0l engine rebuilt, lack of power

Extreme rookie question time...

There was very little increase in HP from the 1.6 litre engine, just more torque:

Land Rover 2 litre Engine specs:
swept engine volume: 1997 cc

cylinder bore: 77.8mm
piston stroke: 105mm
compression ratio: 6.8:1
carburettor: Solex 32 PBI-2
power: 52 bhp at 4000 rpm
torque: 101ft lb at 1500rpm

Can't help you with the timing mark. Maybe if you were to clean it up a bit it may become more clear. Strange circular part must be there for a reason.

Do you know if the new rings were chrome? They tend to take a lot of bedding in. I don't believe that your compression test result is far off the mark.

I did the timing on my Series I a while ago and I have a feeling that the pointer is on a separate pressed steel plate which is missing on yours.

I'd have to get down the back shed to check, if I'm correct your timing would be a long way out. Mine was out but it ran OK, down on power and backfired when switching off, runs a lot better now.
