Yes, the alarm module is indeed built by Joseph Lucas, Prince of Darkness. Incidentally I've had it completely disconnected, box opened, and PCB removed to check for dry joints. The RF module seems to be a separate sub-board mounted on edge to the main board with solder pins. This suggests that it would be possible to replace the 315MHz RF board with a UHF module, assuming you could buy one and the remotes to go with it. You would need to get the alarm module set to learn mode to match its code to the remotes using the LandRover Testbox software, of course.
After the examination I refitted both connectors and, had I not blown the fuse for the module on the main fusebox, it would have worked again without any dramas. I confess that it took me some time to find the blown fuse due to an error in the designation of the fuses in the RAVE CD electrical info.
On another note, I have a vehicle alarm anecdote from a colleague recently arrived in in Oz from South Africa....
It seems that somewhere in South Africa a woman accidentally locked her keys, including the security remote, in the car (not sure how, probably the trick of shutting a rear door last, or a front door with the handle lifted or something). She had, however remembered to get her mobile phone out of the car before locking it so she rang home where her husband was able to find the spare keys and spare security key fob remote.
At this point the woman had a flash of inspiration and held her mobile phone up to the car while getting her husband to hold the spare remote to his phone handset then transmit the unlock signal. She swears it worked, and her car unlocked!
This story apparently received some coverage in the media and people who locked themselves out of their cars all over SA desperately began trying the same technique. Needless to say they had limited success.
I can only assume that if the first woman really was sucessful, she must have been parked in her own driveway within, perhaps 20m or so of her husband. I have to say that no man would even think to try this - talk about thinking outside the square! Peter was unable to tell me if she was a blond.

In the defender the remote is also the imobilizer.
So changing it for another would mean that you could not start the car unless you put the original remote to the ignition switch.
