Needle Bearing Cap - UJs

There is some really stupid, dumb, simple way of dealing with this problem and I cannot remember what it is.

I can remember that it was related to a yoke on a XW Fairmont wagon with a 302 and C4 that I used to own and never should have sold.

Maybe they had clamping yokes, dunno, but the big problem at the time evaporated with the solution that someone gave me.

If the cup is spinning the needle rollers are probably dry causing friction which turns the cup.
Have caught several like this and haven't had a problem just installing a replacement UJ but that was probably because they were spotted early.

The only way the clip can spin is if the cup is rotating.

Colin - I think what you have described is what is happening - only covered about 60kms in the last 5 years so hopefully got it early. I checked all the other caps and they are all OK - this UJ has only covered 30,000km but it does operate outside UJ design tolerances as it is the rear drive of a 101.

Just degreased and washed down the UJ joint so will pull it out tomorrow and see what is going on.

Are you married ?
Does your wife know how little it's used ?
How do you justify the rego & insurance ?

I have a few that are registered and haven't moved hardly at all in 5 years, on the plus side nothing wears out.....
SWMBO is constantly 'on my case' though.

Has laid up insurance and only need to register for three months a year to keep the plates on it.

I would loctite only the cap that was loose on reassembly.
If you are having trouble with items that have been loctited apply some heat. Heat aids removal

I have same problem re my motorcycle.

I removed the driveshaft today and disassembled the UJ - now I remember why I hate doing UJs - they can b easy or hard and this one was hard.

Anyway the UJ itself is in perfect condition, no ingress of water, fully greased and absolutely no wear. As predicted the bearing cap was moving a little with each revolution of the driveshaft - probably one revolution of the bearing cap to 20 or 30 revolutions of the driveshaft - caused by the very slight drag of a perfectly good UJ not a worn one.

Move the cap a thou either side and it locks and was a pain to knock out of the flange. There are no grooves or major wear marks just a minor polishing of the surfaces.

I have another driveshaft (front) that I could take a flange off but would prefer to keep that intact. I checked my old series one stuff and one would fit and are more heavily constructed but I guess the 101 has better metallurgy.

I am tempted to go the Loctite bearing fit route as the cap is still a tight fit but will have a think about it.

If you do use an adhesive, mark the particular cap and monitor it.

I have never tried it with a UJ, but many times with a slightly worn or loose bearing housing a few carefully placed indentations with a centre punch will stop a bearing from rotating. Before the days of Loctite it was standard practice.
