Can a Calcium battery damage Ye Olde battery charger?

I was wondering if anyone has experience with a Calcium battery damaging an old style battery charger? As with my brother working from home, I let him use my battery charger on his car, but it seems it drew about 6 amps for a few days then burnt out. I bought a Century smart charger and noticed that the battery in his car is a calcium type, not sure that is right as it was built 2003 I think? The Century is presently slow/soft charging it, will see if it is happy after 6 hours as it has some sort of analysis function then. At least the new charger has over current, over temp cut outs, etc.

Most modern batteries that aren’t AGM are Calcium.
It’s still just a fancy Lead Acid cell. I’d say the charger was failing.

    Ditto.

I've used Super Charge and Delkor batteries for twenty years with old style chargers without a problem.

the only time any battery will kill a ye olde iron charger is if the battery is shorted. (or the wrong voltage by a long way)

Well the new charger tried to charge the battery for approx 36 hrs then went into "Fault". I suspect the battery has a short, as my brother said when he treid to start the car not even any indication lights came on!

With the battery in place, turn the ignition ON but do not try to start the motor.

With the ignition ON, measure the voltage at the battery terminals.

I suspect you will see something like 10.5v, and this would indicate a dropped or shorted cell.

That’s an excellent site and has been around for many years.

It is also not influenced by any brand or advertising alliances but remember, the info is a generalisation. You still need to check the exact specifics for a given brand and type of battery you may be using.
