    Remote mount LT230 TC options

I am starting a build of an Isuzu conversion (into a 2A Forward Control) in which I intend to use an Isuzu engine & 5 speed gearbox (4JH1 & MYY5T) and a remote mounted LT230 transfer box. The gearbox will be used complete apart from removal of the handbrake drum. Options I had been looking at for remote mounting were:
    - Close coupled prop shaft, approx 300mm flange to flange. These have a slip joint and would enable some non-axial displacement between the gearbox and TC centrelines.
    - Rubber donut style adaptor similar to what Mudmouse did a year or two ago. This only needs approx 150mm spacing. Some shaft fabrication & welding would be required.

Thinking about it today, why couldn't I just use a single uni joint with yoke flanges to suit the flanges off the gearbox output and TC input? I only need to deal with small flex between the gearbox and TC. Any axial movement would be taken up in the rubber engine, gearbox & TC mounts? Both gearbox output and TC input shafts are supported by bearings for both axial and lateral forces (I plan to use a Rakeway TC input shaft). This only requires <100mm length.

Length is important as I need to mount the engine as far back as possible to not compromise cabin space but still retain decent rear prop shaft length. I plan to use a front prop shaft to the rear (so about 650mm length).

I would mount the TC by 2 points only, on each side, so that it would be free to pivot fore and aft at the uni if required. The torque loads are axial anyway so I can't see why it would want to pivot fore & aft, apart from non-axial loads generated by the drive prop shafts to the axles?

    Thoughts?
    Chris

there isnt a front bearing mount in the lt230, you would need to make an adaptor plate to hold the bearing to support the input shaft.

doable and not too hard, if you have a junked anything that bolts onto an lt230 it would be a simple matter tocut the back plate off, make up a seal retainer for the front end and either gouge out the internal seal so Tcase oil would lube the bearing OR set it up for greased.

if you weld up a pair of plate mounts that have 2 offset bolts running to a pair of mounts or a double stud mount you will neatly counter most of the fore and aft movement (there will be more than you expect due to axle wrap and suspension movement) but remember that the drive torque is normally reacted against both the transfer case mounts the engine mounts + all of the mass of the engine and gearbox.

similar things have been done before with about the same amount of technical difficulty.

    have at it.

Santana PS10 / Iveco Massiff use a 2WD / 4WD selectable version of the LT230 , divorced but bolted to the back off the ZF 5S400 (5 speed / 400Nm) gearbox via a short open housing & visible coupler shaft.

That would be a pretty elegant solution & easy to copy.

this bloke used some sort of vibration dampener on a single UJ set up. Vibration dampeners are common on Cummins engines. With some research you could find one in the right size and weld a UJ cup onto it.

Im planning on making up as LT230 with input shaft all the way through , so I can hang 2 Electric Motors on it , one front & one on back.

I have gone with a Rakeway input shaft, and flange-uni-flange on to the output flange from the Isuzu gearbox. Will be only some minor machining to the gearbox output flange to suit the flange I've sourced, to make it all bolt up. Here's hoping!

    Thanks.
Wow, that is a substantial frame he has fabricated to mount it in to!

because its all about the torque.... not revving...
