Disco 1 V8 oil cooler line

Have just replaced the leaking engine oil cooler lines on my Disco 1 V8. I am not a pro mechanic so a biggish job for me.

Interestingly the engine runs better. Took the truck for a couple of 80 k runs to road test it.

Afterwards there was a very small amount of oil on the pipe under the nut where the return pipe enters the engine near the sump cover. Into aluminium.

I got out my 22m spanner and checked how tight it was. It was tight but as I applied pressure it slipped about 1/8 of a turn and stopped.

Is this ok or could I have striped the thread or cracked the aluminium? Haven’t restarted the truck yet.

Thinking about it now, I probably should have released the tension on the clamp holding the two pips before I touched the nut.

They shouldnt need to be overtight. Guessing its like mine (3.5 disco) and should have a bump tube style fitting with an o-ring to seal it. And chance the o-ring got damaged during fitting, or is missing?
There is a good chance of a small amount of residule oil around the fittings after instal, was it washed down after?

Rick1970, thanks I have a 3.9 but the fitting sounds the same, pipe with ridge and o ring. The pipe inserts into hole, a nut screws over the pipe into the hole. Pretty sure the new o ring was there and seated. May have moved I guess when inserting, but hopefully not off the pipe.

I think what I will do is loosen the clamp across the two pipes to remove any unnecessary tension on the pipe, if it exists, and then re-tighten the clamp again.

I won’t touch the nut on the pipe but will road test the truck again and see what happens. I’m assuming if the alloy is damaged oil will leak significantly.

Lines were clean before previous tests.

Here is a pic BEFORE I installed the new pipes.

I have now cleaned the area without touching the union nut tension again. Road tested the truck and no leaks from either of the new hoses.

I also discovered from a bit of research this is the output pipe from engine to the oil cooler ( originally thought it was the input pipe from the oil cooler). It seems that this pipe goes to the bottom of the radiator the oil must flow to the bottom of the radiator from the engine and UP through the oil cooler to return out of the top of the radiator to the oil filter and back into the engine.

BUT the attached pic shows what looks like a crack in the timing cover, where the pipe enters. Or is this just surface damage of some sort ?

Would welcome any opinions on this.

If it is a crack, not sure how long it’s been there, so what’s the best action. Just leave it alone or release the tension on the union nut and retighten with less torque. Or something else. Could this fail over time and require a new timing cover. Google shows these covers may be difficult to get ?

Bit hard to tell via pix, but looks more like a casting flaw. If no leak from there, just leave it and check again at some point.
