    MY03 Disco V8 Uni Joints

    Guys,
my truck gets a noise something like shaking a nut in a milk bottle when the engine comes under load. I t doesn't happen when you do a stall test etc, just when going up hills or accelerating and not all the time. Could this be the prop shaft UV joints or am I off the mark?

******, you really have got a problem with THAT NOISE. I sympathise.
Do you have a diff lock. If yes take the front drive shaft off and drive it in diff lock high. If noise gone then it it is the front. I think these have a double cardan joint at the back which can give trouble.
    Ditto back.
It was pointed out by someone that your car has a Bosch Motronic ECU. These always run at 14.7 :1 Fuel /air ratio stoichometric, whereas earlier cars richen on full throttle. They would be therefore more likely to Ping , all things being equal.

Check the front double cardin joint in the front shaft near the transfer case for any movement - these are a common failure. Also check the rotoflex rubber coupling in the rear shaft for deformation. It should be round, and these will also fail.

Is your car auto or manual? There was a problem with the flywheel or clutch on the manual D2 - but that may have only been on diesels. Very expensive to repair for the owner if the car isn't under warranty.

Defect: Recall affects Discovery Series II Td5 and Defender Td5 derivatives fitted with a manual gearbox. High energy inputs into the clutch and flywheel system may lead to structural failure of the flywheel assembly.

Consequences: Loss of drive. In extreme conditions the flywheel could fragment resulting in extensive damage to clutch housing.

Na, its a V8 auto. The noise sounds like what I would expect a sloppy timing chain to sound like or like a 9/16" nut being rattled around in a glass jar. I have noticed the pront prop shaft does not have a grease nipple, is this how it should be? There is a hole where you would expect a nipple to be,just behind the rubber boot/seal. The rear prop shaft has a nipple in this location, just behind the seal and when you pump in the grease you can see the seal move as it loads up with grease. The front seal onto the shaft is very dry and with no nipple I can't see how it could be lubricated, could this be the problem?

Could be , but unlikely. Grab the shaft and see if there is any sideways movement. If it goes "clunk-clunk" and you will see the movement then the splines are worn. Put a nipple on and put some grease in.

Sometimes noises like this can be as simple as a loose exhaust manifold ( or a blown gasket )or the gasket between the manifold and exhaust pipe.

just had a compression test done............ Low on 4 and 6 and carbon deposits on the plugs, probably pinging after all. The engine only has 54k on it. I have spent (after today's $400 for labour and a new set of sparkplugs) nearly $1000 on trying to find out what the problem is as the dealers I have been to are not interested.
Sounds pretty ominous to me! Now all I have to do is get Land Rovers attention to get it fixed under warranty? So far no calls have been returned........... Now I am getting ****ed off!

The DII from memory, needs a nipple screwed in to lubricate the shaft then have it removed again. Something to do with the Double Cardin Joint clearances.

Could have a head gasket leak between 4 and 6 (centre 2 on left bank)which causes "chuffing".
I would have thought that the Motronic would log a fault but maybe not.
