    Td5 electrical wonders

Gday guys I’m after a bit of advice I have a 01 dII td5 and I’ve been having an issue for quite a long time now it’s the dreaded topside switch failed pre injection the first time it happened was about 2 years ago I was out bush having a play on a few track I went to climb a little hill and it died so I started it and it died again as soon as I gave it a few revs so I put it in low range and let it crawl itself up thinking it was just a wet sensor causing issues I parked it on the side of the road to dry out a little and jump in with one of my mates came back about 20 mins later and tried again started fine but still was dying when revved it would let me rev a little higher this time but not much this is where I found I could put it in reverse and it wouldn’t die at all same for park and neutral anyway I limped it home at low revs and then I did the mag sensor and injector harness cleaned the oil out of the ecu and loom and it was sweet for another 12 months or so then same thing happened went through a puddle and it died as I got out the other side same fault limped it home let it dry and it was fine the next day then it did it a month ago and that’s when I decided I would do the injector harness again and this time replace the ecu so I did that the ecu I got was supposedly good however the day after I put it in I was driving home from work and sure enough there it is again died got the same fault so I parked it and got a lift came back an hour later and it started and drove fine since then I’ve parked it and stayed out of it till I could have a look at a few things I’ve checked a my grounds on the t bar they were fine however I did find my engine ground had 15-20 ohms resistance which I though was high so I cleaned it up with a wire brush and am waiting for another ecu this time I got an nnn I’m just wondering if you guys can think of anything I should check and test

Side note: it only ever seems to happen when I’ve been out in puddles

I've never heard of this problem.
there does seem to be a fair bit of info out there. This may be worth a read. TD5, Topside switch failed pre injection diagnoses help needed
If you have the old ecu it might be worth having a look at the capacitors.

There was a guy on the Landyzone forum that had the same problem diagnosed to a pinhole in the fuel line. Disco TD5 Starting perfect, but cutting out when reved | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum Apparently there was recall in the UK

LAND ROVER announced a problem with the Discovery Series , Diesel TD5 affecting a total of 33,491 vehicles.

Rear fuel line may chafe with ABS/ Water sensor, and fuel pump harnesses with the possibility that a fuel leak may develop Vehicles built from 06/30/2001 to 04/19/2004 are at risk.

The following remedial action is necessary to address this problem. Remove original convolute tubing and replace with smooth PVC tape. Additionally, change fuel line, and re-route the wiring harness to run to the side of the fuel lines.

Vehicles with the following identification numbers are affected:

    SALLTGM981A736101 to SALLTGM834A865281

Cheers mate I’ve already had a read of pretty much every post relating too it I looked at the capacitors on my original ecu and they are fine but apparently it could be a couple of transistors so with any luck the new nnn ecu will fix this but I have also been told to check my wiring too my cas so will do that on the weekend

And welcome to the forum! I added a bit more to my original post for diagnostic. I'm not sure if any possible solutions would relate to water issues though. this may though.... Td5 misfiring and cutting out problem finally solved! | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum
