    Diesel Fire : Un-Seizing a Motor

    Hello All,

Can someone please identify who posted about lighting a diesel fire in each piston bore before attempting to un-seize a motor?

I glanced at the post and meant to come back and read it more closely latter. The person also mentioned how they had described the process earlier in the forum. I have not been able to find the post again; or find the earlier post.

It would be good to be able to track the posts down - thank you.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

From memory I used kero and ATF 2 to 1 I think. Just put it into the cylinder and let it burn, it burns quite slowly. When it had burned out gave the piston a tap (wood with mallet). And all was good

    G'day OldGuy,

Thank you for the reply Old Guy. Is the head taken off when the cylinder is filled and put alight?

    Kind regards

    Hello All,

I just found the post I was after - on a different forum. Just goes to show my lack of attentiveness at the time of reading the post. Had other stuff to go and do at the time. My apologies for the mistake.

Oh and after some more searching the earlier message did mention lighting the diesel fire while the head is off. Accessed 12th July 2020 from MLU FORUM - View Single Post - Rear Cargo Bed 1939 Chevrolet WA...

I have since found a HAMB post that also mentions using diesel to light a small fire in each cylinder of a seized motor. Really, Really Stuck Pistons | The H.A.M.B.

    Kind regards

    Hi Lionel,

I did it with the head off, I soaked a rag in the mix put it on top of the piston and lit it. It burns quite slowly.
Another variation is diesel and ATF 50/50

    Regards
    Geoff

    some of us work.....

and I just got myself some free time to learn ally tig welding and ally mig welding fixing a local guys welder for him....

but yeah heat works, lube works both is great...

my first goto is a good soak and to warm the block up with a halogen lamp.

Grease gun into an adapted glow plug hole and start pumping...

crank open all the valves put a small blower fan in the inlet and then start pouring diesel in light that puppy up

if that doesnt work then take the head off and attack the pistons in a more direct manner.

and yes, melting pistons out with an oxy torch is entirely fair game in a cast iron block.....

    Hello All,

I bought a seized Perkins 6354 diesel motor as a spare on the weekend. Apparently. the motor was a good runner when it was parked up. Then through lack of use the motor seized up. Not to mention the fact the engine was then taken out off the truck and left sitting out in the weather - for who knows how many years?

Tonight I took out each injector and poured neat Ozspray Industry Grade Liquid Lanolin down each bore. I then replaced each injector. I will give it a week soaking to see how well this works.

I did the same technique to my very seized motor out of my 2A ambulance. When I bought the vehicle I checked the oil and found the dipstick lined with a yoghurt like film. Using a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft failed to rotate the engine.

A couple of months ago I removed each spark plug and poured a mixture of diesel and automatic transmission fluid down each bore. The engine remained stuck. So I have moved onto the liquid lanolin approach tonight.

If the lanolin soak does not work, then the heads come off and I will have a go at the diesel fire in each bore.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Couldn't you just heat the block instead of setting the thing on fire ?

before you go there, drain the oil, drop the sump, make sure its not stuck at the bottom end. use the valve adjustment to open all the valves and then put an lpg style blow torch down the inlet manifold. you'll know youve got it just right if you take the exhaust manifold off and get flames coming out the valves. once it gets hot enough you can use a fan to keep the fire going with an oil feed into the pistons. Pulling the glow plugs and the injectors helps with this.
