Have you ever replaced the injector seals - copper washers & 'O' rings?
With high sump level and poor fuel consumption it seems pretty obvious that you're dropping diesel into the sump.
Sounds like you were lucky that you didn't have a runaway event with the engine.

Assuming you have a boost gauge ...Reading ? , ditto egt's
did you check the cold side intercooler hose?, intercooler as well?
Yep , you can turn ign on to check leaks from injector O rings , or floor the accelerator 5 times for purge sequence if you need to look for longer, but recheck oil level after it has been sitting for a few minutes first
Ooh, I cant recall the colour of the smoke, I was thinking it was grey.
I didn't check the cold side of the intercooler,
Good stuff re the fuel, thanks for this!
    Cheers

Thats a really good point Graeme, I'll pull a bit more out on the weekend and give that a go. It'll be interesting to see if there is oil on the turbo inlet side also.

It did have a replacement head a while back, but I'm not sure if the seals were done at the time. It would make sense that they would have been, but thats not at all to say that they were.

I think you're right Roger, I think I probably was really lucky it didn't run away!

Hi Simon. Can't help at all with TD5 diagnosis mate. Just a note to say I feel your pain (V8 LR owner Td5 went bang, diagnosis thoughts?) and I hope it goes well. The Td5 isn't as tender as a V8 and I can't recall one reported on AULRO as grenading.

    Cheers

there was a video of a td5 runaway on here some time back, it didn't grenade it just ground to a halt, cooked , I think.

someone more savvy than me might find it and put it up.

Piston broke ? ... (run those words thru a soundex generator Td5 went bang, diagnosis thoughts?) ..... moving on, do you have an EGT gauge? If yes did you notice the reading at the time of the incident ?

Thanks, a bit of a shocker isn't it. I've been doing a whole lot of reading into BMW M57 (3.0 Td6), 6HP26 auto conversions from the X5 if things are terminal for my motor, but thats an expensive but more modern pathway also.

Mate, no idea what the EGT's were, the engine however would barely have come up to temperature as I was only about 5-7mins from home.
