Thats true, it acts as a shock absorber. Interestingly Ashcroft in the UK are developing a front hub that does the same thing to try and protect CV's from shock loads. Its still in development though.

Thanks scouse that would be much appreicated? When it comes to tailshafts i dont really get what everything does, i understand the function etc but with the 4 bolt pinion flange why do i need another tailshaft? Are the ones from the original series 1 discos and rangies different? MattQuote:

This setup is fine as long as the rubber coupling is strong and the rubber coupling will flex to allow angular movement, but with high traction tyres, jolts, lifts on early style suspension, the rubber couplings will fail.

The Uni jointed tailshaft has the uni bolt to the diff (flange) and the design of the uni makes it stronger with 4 bolts.

And it requires this 4 bolt pinion flange to be bolted to the diff (pinion)

Oh, you need another tailshaft so it has a universal joint on the diff end instead of the rubber coupling.

That must have been the problem the local mech had when I asked him to replace mine.Despite making his own fittings for the press he couldnt budge it.As the exsisting rubber was fine he refitted the original to keep the rest as a spare.

Gday LandyAndy, that really wouldn;t surprise me. I was stripping high tensile bolts trying to pull that centraliser peg, and an adapted sprocket puller wouldn't do the trick either. I ended up angle grinding the flange and it release pretty easily after that. My thoughts were that it was unneeded now anyway.
I'm not sure if you can see in the pics also, that plate/bar was bending also while trying to pull it. There is a special LR tool to do the job, but the special Slunnie tool was a bit more available.
When my pinion seal was leaking the workshop broke their LR tool trying to remove the pinion...they had to fabricate a special one and succeeded after 24 hours (a whole day;) ) of penetration fluid.Quote:
