LT230 Output bearings & Oil seals:

More information for subsitute parts - this time the Lt230 transfer case.

First: There is a good article for changing the output seal and bearing located a

    http://www.discoweb.org/tcasebearing/index.htm

Input/output shaft oil seal - supposed to be FRC7043, a single lip standard oil seal. My spare TC has FTC 4939, a double lip version.

CBC has a listing for FRC7043, their number (and probably manufacturer number) IND51568. ($19)

TR spares equivalent - $14, no manufacturer number.

    Output bearing - STC 1130. Is a standard 6207 bearing ($25) .

And last but not least - this is how I got it out of the housing -

Two long 5/16 ordinary bolts hammered in, and turn 90 degrees to engage thread in bearing, then a cheap steering wheel puller. Of course the bearing cage is damaged and you can't use it and the bolts again.

Use silicone on the splines when reassembling, to really stop future leaks.

But if you see a wet looking patch above the output of the TC on the underside of the floorpan, then your seal is on the way out. I found dirt in the inner part of the seal, so I replaced it just in time.

Lagy, your a legend, I too looked at Disco web and wondered how the hell the poster got the bearing out as there is nothing for a puller to grab. Did yours pop out easily? What made you replace yours, was it whining?

    Output shaft bearing

Howdy: I was chasing down front end vibrations, and had the propshaft off. There was some play in the output shaft ( I know, its a Landrover...), and I was able to get a good look at the floorpan - since the seal was going, and the previous owner seemed to have mistreated my car, It seemed prudent to fit a new bearing. $40 well spent not to have to worry about it for another ten years.

As to removal - before you take the bearing out, clean the crap from the housing with some steel wool or emery paper. Have a decent set of circlip pliers. Makes a huge difference.

Then the puller just winds it out - no sweat.

    Bearings

ADDENDUM TO PULLING THE BEARING OUT:

    1. Use 5/16 UNC x 4 inch High tensile bolts. (M8 x 100)

    2. After cleaning the housing before pulling, use a large screwdriver to rotate the outer race of the bearing - ie break the grip of the housing on the bearing. Try a few hits with the screwdriver and a hammer. Be carefull not to lever on the housing, it is aluminium after all.

I've just completed doing my rear output seal and bearing, and I was going good until I hit this snag. ( There's a joke in there somewhere). I had bought some hardware store bolts for the job, but as I twisted them 90 degrees to lock into the bearing, they sheared off. Had to dig up some HT from my spares box. Then it took some muscle to break the bearing from the housing. Have somthing to protect the end of the output shaft, and use care, because the HT bolts could fly free under the load it was under. An empty masterfoods squeezable sauce bottle did well to refill the transfer case.

How easy is/was it to get the new bearing into place?

Provided you clean up the bore with emery paper prior to assembly, the new bearing goes in with just a few taps.

    Double lip seals

Following on from this thread; I will soon pull out my LT230 (2005 td5 defender) to fix some oil leaks and will order a seal and gasket set from ebay. I think my rear output is leaking as well as intermediate shaft o-ring. A couple of questions before I get ordering:

Should I toss the oil seals in the kit and replace with locally sourced double lip seals to try and avoid leakage?

Anything else I should do while I'm there?

Do I need a new crush sleeve between the bearings or am I not going to need to disassemble it that far for a reseal?

I will check out the bearings while I'm there and the output flanges for wear and replace as necessary.

4wdindustries here in Maitland NSW say they have a 'Fix' for the oil leaks in the LT230, machining of a housing of some sort, maybe it's sleeving the intermediate shaft bore? unless anyone might know what this mod is?

    Thanks!

    Hey,
    How'd the re-seal go?
I'm just about to do mine and wasn't 100% sure on the gasket kit.
I've checked the web and found conflicting info re gaskets or using LR sealants.
In particular the middle seals and how a gasket might affect the bearing preloads???

    Any advice?

    Cheers
