OK. Job nearly done. No dimensions as they will vary according to what you're attaching it to. But I did make the winch gantry about 65cms long to allow it to be raised more to allow better control when reattaching the tyre. I also made it so it swings around in the round tube as well for the same reason.
Round upright tube is ally and gantry (I'll call it that 'cos I like it) is approx. 25mm steel square tube. I've turned it sideways for travel as I'll leave it attached and put a keeper bolt through to hopefully make it a bit harder to nick..... I've also removed the handle for the same reason.
When I need to use it I'll remove the keeper bolt, lift the tube/winch and then slip the bolt back through it's locating hole and the winch can then rest on it and swivel around.
Total cost with welding of tubing and the steel tube, plus winch about 120 bucks all up. Nuts and bolts from the shed.
No doubt I'll fiddle a bit tidying things up and repainting etc but overall I think it'll work quite well and take the strain off my back. Plus my dearly beloved Cook can use it as well.
    Alan.

PS. Spacer between tube and RWC was a bit of jarrah cut and painted to fit with just enough room for the device not to touch the rear screen wiper.

PPS. It'll be a stretch to the handle for those who are a bit on the wee side but stand on the wifes shoulders and she'll be right.

Always knew there was a brain lurking in there amongst all the other stuff - well done that man!

I'll leave it to you to "improve" it Gavin. Like you reckon you did with my very good Oztent carrier. If you can that is. Pah.

The upper door just clears the winch when the RWC is in the side position. I've got a small shackle I'll be using instead of the original winch hook as I think it'll be safer for my Cook when she's changing the wheels around..... Last thing is a tube to slip over the stud to make lining the wheel up easier.
    Cheers.

I've now adapted the RWC on our van to take the winch and it works a treat. Van wheels are just as heavy as the Discos and it's easy to just lift the winch from it's position there and refit by slipping it into the tube shown.
Anything which saves my ageing joints and skin is good for me.

Actually, a lot of us navigate the forum by using the "New posts" button at the top. Far more info to be found that way than by simply focussing on particular interests. I found your thread, was interested enough to have a gig, but was unable to contribute and so didn't. Until now, that is I'll need something similar, if bigger, if I ever get an OKA.

If I recall, you actually admitted my home made roller at the back was a slight improvement.

If anyone is interested, I have converted this thread to a word document where photos can be enlarged to suit fading eyes (permission to be sought from the inventor after the event?), and well done Alan.

"If I recall, you actually admitted my home made roller at the back was a slight improvement." Not sure your memory is correct there Gavin as I'd already put a roller on the back to assist us older persons and those who are getting shorter with age, to slide the tent on.
However, anything which helps people do things is OK by me which is the reason I decided to make my own RWC winch and then make it transferable to the van.

One of us is slightly mistaken, but perhaps it was that I expanded your concept and put 3 rollers on to ease the stowing of the RV4. In any event well done in the first place!

I also was following your excellent handiwork .

However ,when you got to standing on the little woman’s shoulders, I suffered pangs of anxiety and could’nt bring myself to write.

Sounds like the same sort of anxiety I suffered when a huge 18 stone Taffy mate of mine after a night out on the booze together and finding ourselves locked out of the pub we were living in in Shrewsbury..... "Bend down Alan and I'll get up on your shoulders and get through that window"!!!!
And I just a 10 stone weakling built for speed and things not lifting large lumps of fighting bone and muscle.
