Discovery 1 Head Light Leak or Condensation?

    Hello All,

How does water get into the driver's side headlight on a D1? Or is it simply condensation? The vehicle is parked outside and has not been driven for a while.

When I first got my Discovery the driver's side headlight did not work, nor the indicator. When I took the driver's side headlight out I noticed it felt heavy. I then found a significant amount of water sloshing around inside the headlight. This headlight did have a stone chip and a bit of a crack in it. So I put the water ingress down to the crack. A month or so ago, I replaced the driver's side headlight with one that was in very good condition. Today I noticed that the driver's side headlight looked like it had a build up of condensation inside it. The passenger side headlight is dry.

What can be done to stop the headlight filling up? Well apart from parking it inside the shed. Other vehicles are higher up the pecking order for shed privileges.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

The smoke has escaped and made room for the water.

    Hello All,

Thank you Loanrangie - well you did at least reply.

I did some digging on the internet and it seems that water ingress and condensation were linked in the UK with the Discovery 2 headlights. Accessed 23rd March 2021 from Discovery 2 headlights 1/2 full of water | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum and Headlight condensation | Page 2 | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum

I checked again today since we have had more rain over night and throughout the day, and I definitely only have the issue in the driver's side headlight. I will have a closer look at any seals.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Never had any water ingress issues in my 11 year D1 ownership.

I should have replied earlier too .. sorry.

I (used too) get condensation in my drivers side D1 light too, no crack. .. Then a crack(stone chip) .. then a smash(bird flew in front). Once smashed, I drove for a few days prior to replacing it .. condensation all gone!
Never had water in them tho (until bird strike). With a large hand sized hole easy for water to get in, and Jan produced a lot of rain.

I have a D2 project car, so ripped headlights off that. Never had condensation in them. Now on the D1 until I need them back for the D2 once it's about to go on the road. Still no condensation or water inside after a few days rain too.

I went up to the local Pick-a-part to get some stuff for my nephew, and had a sniff around for any Discos. There were two, The D2 lights were missing() but there was a pre update D1, with the small 5x7 type headlights. Funnily, the drivers side unit had water in it, passengers side not.

I assumed that the condensation/water ingress when the headlight looked intact, would be due to one of two things. Rear rubber protective boot not protecting properly(leaking or something) or the seal between glass cover and plastic body isn't 100% tight.

Is the rear rubber boot still there behind the headlight unit? If so and looks in v.good condition, and obviously not leaking, then maybe the allround seal has dried out or something.
